Studies on Salmonella Spp Isolated from Cllnical Sources

Abstract
One hundred and eighteen strains of Salmonella spp were isolated from clinical sources, at National Medical Center during five years(1968-1972).
1) This strains identified as follows:
S. typhi 105
S. typhimurium 6
S. enteritidis 2
S. newington 2
S. newport 1
S. paratyphi A 1
S. paratyphi B 1
2) Tentative diagnosis at the admission is typhoid fever, 35(31. 1%), FUO, 31 (28.496), local abscess, 8(8.4,%), and liver disease, 6(5.5%).
3) The most frequent symptom at the admission is fever(90.8%/), general weak ness(56.95%), diarrhea(38.5%/), abdominal pain(32. 1%1), and nausea and vomiting(30.3%).
4) Total numbers of the age group from 11-20 years, 21-30 years, and 31-50 years old respectively are higher than total numbers from other age groups.
5) Seasonal trend shows hot and cold season e.g. Jan. & July is more prevalent.
6) Correlation of strain source with clinical material shows the highest incidence of blood, next to this stool, pus, bile, pleural cavity, etc. in descending order.
7) The rate of susceptibility to several antibiotics is high in general except erythromycin and nitrofurantoin. Especially, in case of streptomycin sensitive strains are 105(91.2%), ampicillin sensitive strains are 102(95.3%/), but chloramphenicol sensitive strains are 63(54.3%).
